Nena Daconte’s new album, “Retales de Carnaval” (Universal, 2008) is now a reality. Two years of experience, tours and awards have given rise to a new collection of songs that highlights the essence of this 21st century Spanish pop group revelation.
This is a lighter, more colourful and more optimistic album, which confirms the composition quality and unique style of a band in the process of continual expansion. Newfound maturity, as well as the thrill of putting together a truly original project, can be glimpsed in the power that resonates from these eleven new songs, characterised by carefully chosen words and the precious vocal melodies of Mai Meneses, replete with feeling. This, in addition to the captivating rock of Kim Fanlo, production, guitar and arrangements comprise an alternative symbology that marks this group out in comparison with groups such as Weezer or Wilco. The sound created by this band is an impeccable, sweet and exquisite pop, highly more-ish.
One only needs listen to the first single “TenĂa tanto que darte” to become caught up in the universe of Daconte, a fusion of different sensations: joy and intimacy, anger and passion, melancholy and a lust for life. “Ay! amor” is another vision of poetic sincerity that immediately connects with anybody currently in love, or “Mientras” which throws up intimately crude verses through pleasant and accessible sounds, which manages to transmit moments we would all rather forget in such a way that they can be overcome.
Nena Daconte has, then, made a come back “Retales de Carnaval”, which increases the quality of the national Pop-Rock scene with the culmination of a process that the group began shaping on an independent basis, but which has led them to become a new referent within Spanish music; this is due largely to the perfect combination of lyrics, music, sensuality and attitude, the result when art and passion go hand in hand.
